In the fourth year of the Civil Engineering course, students have the option to take up a 6-month industrial placement. This exciting opportunity enables students to gain “real life” experience while working on some of the largest Civil Engineering projects in Ireland.
Our department has a long and rich history of working with industry, enabling us to place our students in challenging and rewarding roles.
Dr Breiffni Fitzgerald is the Civil Engineering coordinator for our industrial placements. He works with our fourth year students, setting up placements and ensuring that every eligible student secures an interesting and challenging placement.
I was lucky enough to complete my placement with the water team in Arup during my fourth year in Trinity. It was an invaluable experience and not only allowed me to apply the knowledge I had gained throughout the degree to real life engineering problems, but also helped me to confirm the stream of engineering in which I wanted to specialise. As I am now permanently employed by Arup, it is safe to say the placement is also a great way to get your foot in the door of a highly-respected company and build your professional network. The internship was a great opportunity to explore a new workplace (AECOM) and to prepare for time after Trinity. The internship scheme is a great opportunity to prepare for time after college as it provides insights into new workplaces. Thilo Becker Research Associate, Aachen University

It was brilliant to be given the opportunity to complete an industry placement in the final year of my BAI degree. By completing an internship I gained real-world experience and learned how an engineering consultancy runs on a day-to-day basis. Post graduation, I have found that I have used many of the skills that I developed on my internship in my current job. It was a brilliant experience and was a nice break from the typical college routine! Laura Byrne Business Architecture Transformation Specialist, Accenture

AECOM have been involved in the TCD engineer placement programme for a number of years and would really encourage students to get involved. Students get an opportunity to work in AECOM across a number of engineering sectors such as transportation, bridges and buildings to understand the engineering business and figure out where their longer term interests lie. The programme has been a wonderful success in our minds and a high proportion of students have been rehired into the business following graduation. DBFL have taken a significant number of placements from TCD in recent years, in Structures and Transportation. We treat the placement candidates as Graduate Engineers and give them appropriate tasks. Both we and the candidates benefit from a great understanding of the aptitude of the candidate for the role chosen, and we have generally found we would be strongly disposed to offering a full-time position in the firm upon graduation. We are now engaging on the placement of candidates at an earlier stage in their course to get a good relationship in place for future engagement in their course and career. Collaboration with the Trinity College work placement programme has provided Atkins with a high calibre student resource for many years. A number of the students have subsequently become graduates and future leaders, having impressed their colleagues whilst on placement with us. The opportunity the scheme provides to both the student and employer is fantastic and we are proud to continue our association with the programme.
