Dr Charles Holland, Fellow Emeritus and former Professor of Geology and Mineralogy, at the School of Natural Sciences, Trinity College Dublin, was awarded the 2008 Lapworth Medal of the Palaeontological Association in December. The medal is awarded to palaeontologists who have made an outstanding contribution to the science through research.
Dr Holland was honoured with the Lapworth medal for his work at the forefront of research on the palaeontology and stratigraphy of the Lower Palaeozoic period (590 – 400 million years) throughout his career of over 50 years. His work is recorded in over 150 scientific articles and three books. Dr Holland was also recognised for his ability to unite the talents of others in collaborative ventures, particularly in the standardisation of terminology of Silurian period rocks throughout the globe.
Founded in 1957, the Palaeontological Association has become one of the world’s leading learned societies in this field which promotes the study of palaeontology and its allied sciences.
