Peter Wilson, former Director of Dublin Zoo, which he led from the brink of closure to its position as one of the most important zoos in Europe and Anthony Cronin, a distinguished Irish author who played a leading role in founding Aosdána and in the establishment of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, were among five recipients to receive an Honorary Degree from the University of Dublin (Trinity College), on Friday December 14, 2001.
The three other recipients of Honorary degrees were
James Perry O’Flaherty ‘Joss’ Lynam LL.D. (Doctor in Laws) – leader of Irish Expeditions to the Himalayas, he also directed the restoration of the monastic settlement of Skellig Michael.
Brother James Plunkett Nolan M.Ed. (Master in Education) – Principal of St. Mary’s College of Education, Marino (1975-2000), he helped develop the ecumenical training of primary teachers in Ireland. He was also one of the founders of the B.Ed (Bachelor in Education) degree.
Mary Paula Pollard Litt.D. (Doctor in Letters) – historical bibliographer who was instrumental in the establishment of the Department of Early Printed Books at Trinity College Dublin.
