Trinity Sport, in association with Bank of Ireland, last night officially unveiled this year’s sports scholars at an event in the Dining Hall. This year’s awardees, comprising 35 Trinity Sport scholars and 30 Club Academy scholars, will represent Trinity in sports ranging from athletics to sailing, association football to squash.
In addition to scholars and their friends and family, guests included members of the college community including Trinity Business School’s Jongwook Pak, Director of Campus Infrastructure Mike Clark and DUCAC’s Cyril Smyth, while Bank of Ireland were represented by Sean L’Estrange, Sophie O’Halloran and Heather McArdle.
Sean L’Estrange, who is Head of Bank of Ireland for Dublin City, also spoke on the night. As a coach and former player, he commented on how he’s seen, first-hand, the benefits sport brings.
“It teaches us resilience, life-long skills, gives us life-long friendships. Sport is a vital part of life – it teaches us about losing, about being graceful in victory and teaches us what hard work is all about.”
Head of Sport Michelle Tanner added: “Our athletes often make it look easy but it’s important to recognise the effort that goes in to producing a great performance. Our role in Trinity Sport is to make that journey a little bit easier.”
Special guests on the night were former Irish international soccer player Kevin Kilbane and former Ireland and England cricketer Ed Joyce. The latter was announced as the latest Trinity Sport ambassador, joining rugby player Ailis Egan, hockey player Ronan Gormley and Olympic rower Sinead Jennings.
