The two-part television documentary, Cromwell in Ireland, co-scripted and presented by TCD historian, Dr Micheál Ó Siochrú, won the ‘Best Single Documentary’ category at the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) award ceremony on February 14th last. The documentary was broadcast last September on RTÉ 1, achieving one of the highest ever ratings for a history programme on that channel, and is currently showing on The History Channel in the UK. The Smithsonian Channel in the US recently purchased the documentary, and will broadcast it later in the year.
Dr Micheál Ó Siochrú lectures in history at TCD’s School of Histories and Humanities and has written extensively on seventeenth-century Ireland. His latest book, God’s Executioner: Oliver Cromwell and the Conquest of Ireland (Faber & Faber), is available in all bookshops.
