Trinity College Dublin has reinforced its reputation as Ireland’s leading university with a strong performance in the newly-published QS Subject Rankings 2018. The QS Subject Rankings look at the performance of universities worldwide across 48 different subjects in five broad subject areas. Trinity is ranked in the top 50 for four subjects – the most of any Irish university – and the top 100 for 16 subjects. Overall, the University has achieved a ranking in 32 of the 48 subjects and all five broad subject areas, underlining the strength and breadth of the University’s research across a wide range of disciplines.
The University’s top 50 subjects include Nursing ranked in 25th place, Classics and English both ranked 28th, and Politics ranked in 43rd place. Four Irish universities have ranked in the top 100 globally for Nursing, with Trinity’s being the highest placed.
Additionally, Trinity is ranked in the QS top 100 in the world in each of the following 16 subjects: History, Languages, Philosophy, Theology, Computer Science, Biology, Medicine, Pharmacy, Chemistry, Geography, Materials Science, Education, Law, Social Policy, Sociology and Sport.
It has also been ranked in three broad subject areas: Arts & Humanities in 57th place globally; Life Sciences & Medicine in 87th place, and Engineering & Technology in 89th place. Trinity’s 57th place in the Arts & Humanities subject area is the best performance of an Irish university in the faculty tables.
The QS 2018 Subject Rankings are compiled based on a review of 1,130 institutions in a total of 151 countries. Universities are scored according to academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact (citations).
Commenting on the significance of the achievement, Trinity’s Dean of Research, Professor Linda Doyle says: “This achievement is testament to the excellent, and globally competitive, research our staff carry out, as well as reflecting the quality students that Trinity attracts. It is particularly important that employers as well as academics were consulted for these rankings, demonstrating how well regarded Trinity graduates are by employers worldwide.”
