All research carried out under the auspices of the Trinity College Dublin will be “conducted ethically and with integrity, and shall be founded upon the principles of honesty, reliability, objectivity, impartiality, independence, fairness, respect, accountability, open communication, compliance with duties of care, and responsibility for future generations of researchers. (IUA 2019: 8)”. Furthermore, academic journals and research funders are increasingly requiring that research is reviewed and approved by the relevant research ethics committee (REC) and that evidence of this be provided.
It is required that - prior to a research study commencing – an ethics review must be carried out. Please consult the TCD Good Research Practice Guide for detailed discussion of good research practice and the role of research ethics. The first step is determining whether your research requires ethical approval from the appropriate research ethics committee (REC) - see TBS checklist below.
If you are planning to undertake research within TBS, please consult the Research Ethics Committee Membership list (see below) to determine which individual to contact regarding your ethics approval application and the process to follow. Staff and PhD students should contact the REC Chair and students should contact the individual listed here for their specific programme / course. Links to the required templates and training can be found at the bottom of this page – and further information specific to each TBS programme may also be found on the relevant Blackboard page for that programme.
