Trinity College’s Suas society is hosting the 1000 Families Exhibition in celebration of Intercultural Week, 19 -24 February.. The exhibition which consists of 50 large freestanding images of families from across the globe aims to celebrate the diversity and multiculturalism of the Trinity campus. The images are sourced from a book entitled 1000 Families – The Family Album of Planet Earth which is a compilation of photographs taken by German photographer Uwe Ommer as he travelled across 130 countries meeting with families just before the millennium.
The exhibition was held in Merrion Square in September and October of last year by Concern in conjunction with Suas and was hugely successful. By holding the exhibition within the grounds of Trinity College, Suas hopes to highlight and celebrate the growing cultural diversity of the campus community, and Ireland. It is the first exhibition of its kind to be held on the campus grounds.
The exhibition will form the centrepiece for an entire week of campus wide events with various cultural elements. Through all the events we aim to:
– encourage active interaction between students of different nationalities– promote harmony among all cultures represented in Trinity life– and to wholeheartedly celebrate the diversity that exists within our university.
There are currently 91 different nationalities represented in the ranks of staff and students in Trinity College, a sign that the University is truly an international institute and a University of its time. Events are aimed at both staff and students of Trinity College to encourage cultural celebration and engage the college community with the various issues of diversity.
